Developmental and Structural Editing gives your story a good base. During this process, characters are evaluated, fleshed out, or eliminated, if necessary. The plot (and any holes it may have) is fully worked out. If you find yourself stuck at 50,000 words of what’s supposed to be a 75,000-word book, if the manuscript just seems to be missing something and you can’t put your finger on it, or if you find that your manuscript can’t get the attention of agents or publishers, Developmental Edits are the place to start.

Line Edits ensure strong, clear sentences and paragraphs and reduce redundancy. Line Edits also help make voice consistent and compelling and are good for catching any errors in timelines, historical facts, and the mechanics of any specific subject in your manuscript.

Copy Edits make sentences grammatically correct. Copy editors are experts in punctuation, clarity (or intentional ambiguity) of wording, and formatting. If you are looking to self-publish, Copy Edits are necessary to create a book that consistently assures the reader of its quality. If you are seeking traditional publication, Copy Edits are usually done by the publishing house, and you probably don’t need to hire a copy editor.

Proofreading ensures a finished manuscript is 95% error free. If you are self-publishing or submitting an academic paper like a thesis or dissertation, this is an invaluable service. Our proofreading service includes paper and citation formatting, spelling and grammar review, and otherwise meeting the requirements of the professor or publication.
If you are looking for traditional publishing of a book intended as literature (memoir, novel, novella, short story, personal essay), this is the publisher’s responsibility, not yours.
